Trends and drivers affecting the Marine Industry in Ireland

trends-and-drivers-affecting-the-marine-industry

The next 10 years will see lots of developments evolve in the Marine Industry. Despite Covid, Ireland’s Marine Industry continues to grow and progress each year with Irish Ports and shipping companies making significant investments.

Development works are in progress in Dublin Port as part of the Dublin Port Masterplan 2012-2040. They plan to invest up to €1 billion by 2040 on improving the port’s capacity for larger ships and the development of the Alexandra Basin. The Port of Cork and Shannon Foynes are also investing in their port facilities.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is another key driving force shaping the Marine Industry. Studies have shown that autonomous ships are viable. These are crew-less vessels that can transport either containers or bulk cargo over navigable waters with little or no human interaction. The Mayflower Autonomous Ship could be the first robotic vessel to safely cross the Atlantic in Spring 2021 from the UK. The vessel will be operated by the latest IBM artificial intelligence(AI) systems.
