Its been a turbulent start to 2021 for Ireland’s Truck Industry. Delays in some ports in the UK and Europe due to increased post Brexit checks are expected until the new system has settled down and hauliers become familiar with the new paperwork required. 

Ports are working very hard to minimise disruption and ensure a smooth transition. As an island economy, Ireland is highly dependent on transport. Fifty-three million tonnes of cargo transversed Irish Ports in 2019 (Source: IIEA). It is critical that all possible steps are taken so trade can continue to flow seamlessly.

Haulier’s have faced huge challenges recently. Drivers are under increasing pressure to complete their schedules and make their deliveries. Long delays due to Brexit and Covid-19 have added to these pressures. They deserve huge credit and our thanks for ensuring that goods are delivered and supermarket shelves are full. Once the Brexit transition period is over, we wish brighter roads will prevail for this industry.
