Calmac Example

CalMac is the UK's largest ferry operator, running 29 routes to over 50 destinations, across 200 miles of Scotland's west coast. The fleet of 33 vessels complete approximately 136,000 sailings a year with crossings ranging from 5 minutes to 7 hours. They perform regular maintenance and repairs in order to maximise their vessels efficiency and therefore maximise their end profit.

In Spring 2019 we were approached by Calmac to review their processes and procedures and  investigate whether an Apollo AT2000 could provide labour savings and additional production benefits. Their brief was to remove carbon, oils, paint and other contaminants from engine components.

The Apollo AT2000 has a tank capacity of up to 2000 litres which is used to cleaning marine engine components. It has a patented centrifugal filter, that offers a major saving in chemical replacement due to the significant extension in the service life of the cleaning solution.

We carried out a number of successful trials, see before and after images below. Based on a number of criteria we identified that there were savings to be made in labour, in both time and money and there were also additional production benefits.

The Apollo machine arrived in Glasgow in October 2019, just in time for Calmac’s scheduled vessel downtime. Six months later Calmac are very happy with their new tank.
